Balantidium coli (Malmsten, 1857) (Ciliophora: Balantiidae) is the largest protozoan and the only ciliate parasite to infect humans. Infection with this parasite is not common in humans, and only 1000 cases had been reported before 1980. Its presence has been reported in parts of the world as far north as Sweden, Finland and Northern Russia, and the highest prevalence rates are in tropical and subtropical regions. Estimates of worldwide prevalence are usually !1%, although higher rates are reported in hyperendemic areas and in some residential institutions [1]. The presence of B. coli is frequently reported in Central and South America

The Enigma of Human T-Cell Leukemia Virus Type-1 (HTLV-1) Infection in Iran
Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-I (HTLV-I) was the first human retrovirus associated with malignancy. The prevalence of HTLV-I infection varies significantly in different regions of the world. In this study, the prevalence of HTLV-I infection among ethnic Jews living in Shiraz, South of Iran, was investigated. 286 blood samples were obtained. HTLV-1 antibody assay on serum samples was d...
متن کاملUrinary balantidiasis: A rare incidental finding in a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Balantidiasis is a rare zoonotic disease in humans. Balantidium coli is the causative ciliated protozoan. We present a case of urinary balantidiasis in a patient having chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who was on steroids for a long time. He has no symptoms of bowel or urinary involvement. We are reporting this case because of its rarity in human urine and also for future references.

Context. Be stars, which are characterised by intermittent emission in their hydrogen lines, are known to be fast rotators. This fast rotation is a requirement for the formation of a Keplerian disk, which in turn gives rise to the emission. However, the pulsating, magnetic B1IV star β Cephei is a very slow rotator that still shows Hα emission episodes like in other Be stars, contradicting curre...
متن کاملTreatment of Balantidial Dysentery with Hydrarg Biniodide
an interval of 12 days the stool was again examined and found to contain numerous highlymotile Balantidium coli but the giardia cysts had all disappeared. The patient was now haying 6 to 8 loose motions daily but his condition was far from satisfactory and I was thoroughly disappointed with the treatment given so far. Following the more recent publication by Shun-Shin (1947) of a series of 10 c...
متن کاملAmebae and ciliated protozoa as causal agents of waterborne zoonotic disease.
The roles free-living amebae and the parasitic protozoa Entamoeba histolytica and Balantidium coli play as agents of waterborne zoonotic diseases are examined. The free-living soil and water amebae Naegleria fowleri, Acanthamoeba spp., and Balamuthia mandrillaris are recognized etiologic agents of mostly fatal amebic encephalitides in humans and other animals, with immunocompromised and immunoc...
